Autumn Cafe represents a sort of pause in my work, a pause between a body of paintings started with Meeting Point and Summer Cafe, (Also on this site) and later developments where the paint is applied in a more liberal less predictive manner.

Autumn Cafe is a synthesis between a very personal and heartfelt iconagraphy and an easing in how I treat paint and the ground it is placed on.Stains, print techniques as well as brush and roller work are employed to gave layers within each area, with produce a rich surface and reflect the layers of meaning that his painting represents to me.

FELT AND WAVE

Felt and Wave uses in part a series of marks reflecting the depth of fibres to be found in felt, particularly the layers of threads to be found in'craft or fine art'felt.As with any abstract painting made in these post modern times there are elements of homage if not direct borrowing from works of the past. The large stained area allows for an element of chance within the picture making, this initial staining activity, the first paint application dictated how the rest of the work developed.

Coast

This work has more exploration of surface than other works, there has been a deliberate attempt at making edges work in terms of denoting space, one area appears to recede from another, or form is created by some areas having tonal or proportional arrangements that imply more than flatness.

The title comes from Umberto Eco's essay on the degree to which an artists creates non-narrative work relying on the viewer's experience etc.,to bring some understnding to the work.

Rift

This is one of a number produced in the 35 x 35 cm size. The square format and scale of the painting seem to allow for tight explorations of composition. I see them as complete works in their own right, requiring quite a lot of neutral space around them to really focus the colour and compositional elements. From my development point of view they help me work out compositions that are proposed for larger scale works.

Rift takes as its starting point the idea of parting,the blue surface being a continues surface broken by the rift in the lower third of the composition, this heightened by the Cadmium Red line.the white edges where introduced to make the surface float away from the confines of the frame

A friend of mine makes felt and the depth of thread resembles or embodies many layers which I considered a good metaphore for the complications of image making. I devised a series of active marks which also became a homage to Pollack, this was instigated by an attempt to create the complexity of depth found in felt. Other symbols from my personal vocabulary were used to play off the very busy surface. Some of the shapes employed although originating elsewhere, reminded me of the Cornish Trioca pottery style hence the name.

nine thirty five

This work developed from a series of paintings that were 35cm square,the intention was to create a total image that was formed from an association of colour and shape without creating a sense of depth or space other than found in the relationship of the colours used and their effect on the eye.

The origin of the work developed from the painting of a 35 cm square as a complete work, I then divided up the canvas into eight other squares and these were then used to respond to the central work either in shape, colour or development of the symbols oroginally employed. This method of working I found stimulating in that I could not predict how the work would develop or end up.Once underway s each area grew there was a required series of adjustments to make the piece cohesive.

Karouac's Road was painted whilst listening to a radio programme about 'On the Road'being republished and that it had been written on one piece of continuos paper in a caffeine fuelled frenzy. There is also a bit of Ry Cooder's pink guitar in there as a tribute to his Paris Texas theme
