Peter Newell

After leaving the Slade in 1981 I ran a commercial sculpture studio for about twenty years. However in the last few years within my sketchbooks and journals I have generated ideas that have been explored through a large body of work consisting of paintings and drawings embracing a series of personal icons which are then used as compositional devices. This all sounds very dry but the act of painting, in all its forms and the use of colour, has really provided a drive and motivation not felt for some time. I am deliberately avoiding mimesis and implied space and depth, preferring to generate a whole image through the composition of the work on the surface, possibly meaningless to others in terms of personal symbols but hopefully successful on the level that the works are visually stimulating with perhaps some glimmer as to what my starting point was. Most recently I have been working with my son , the audio-visual artist Tom Newell, making works that involve paintings and installations upon which a mapped film is projected revealing over time new possibilities interms of meaning and compositions. We have been accepted for this years Bristol Biennalle with this practice.
