After leaving the Slade in 1981 I ran a commercial sculpture studio for about twenty years. However in the last four years within my sketchbooks and journals I have generated ideas that have been explored through a large body of work consisting of paintings and drawings embracing a series of personal icons which are then used as compositional devices. This all sounds very dry but the act of painting, in all its forms and the use of colour, has really provided a drive and motivation not felt for some time. I am deliberately avoiding mimesis and implied space and depth, preferring to generate a whole image through the composition of the work on the surface, possibly meaningless to others in terms of personal symbols but hopefully successful on the level that the works are visually stimulating with perhaps some glimmer as to what my starting point was.
